Aerohive Networks Reduces Wi-Fi Operational Costs By Delivering Enhanced Visibility and Control
Release of HiveOS and HiveManager 3.5 Introduces the Concept of Client Health Delivering Enhanced Service Level Assurance and New TeacherView WLAN Administration Application
SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 27, 2010 — Aerohive Networks, creators of the award-winning cooperative control wireless LAN (WLAN) architecture, today announced significant enhancements to its Hive AP Operating System (HiveOS), HiveManager Network Management System and its unique WLAN Service Level Assurance (SLA) capability. In addition, the Company introduced a new WLAN administration application called TeacherView, designed to reduce the burden on teachers utilizing Wi-Fi in their classroom. With these solutions Aerohive gives IT departments and administrators greater levels of visibility and control over users' Wi-Fi experience.
In addition, Aerohive is continuing to innovate on ease of use and management of Wi-Fi networks with the introduction of the Aerohive Wi-Fi Client Health Score. The new functionality provides easy "at a glance" visibility into the status or health of clients connected to the Wi-Fi network. It replaces the complex mass of client statistics typically provided by WLAN vendors with an intuitive green, yellow or red aggregate representation, substantially demystifying Wi-Fi trouble shooting and reducing the management burden associated with supporting a wireless infrastructure.
"While the core focus on throughput, capacity and scalability remains, as it should, the most important opportunity in wireless LANs today is in management," said Craig Mathias, a Principal with the wireless and mobile advisory firm Farpoint Group. "Increased functionality and ease-of-use, extending to the client, are key to lower operating expenses. And we are also impressed with Aerohive's new TeacherView app, which brings ease-of-use and improved productivity all the way to end user communities."
With the recent ratification of 802.11n and the tremendous capital cost advantages that Wi-Fi delivers over cabling every cube in the enterprise, it has the potential to truly replace Ethernet in the access layer. To succeed Wi-Fi must deliver determinism approaching that of Ethernet and reduce the operational costs associated with managing Wi-Fi client devices in the enterprise. With the introduction of the Wi-Fi Client Health Score and the improved SLA solution, Aerohive enables network engineers to quickly, easily and cost-effectively deploy and support WLAN access to all employees while ensuring wire-like performance and reliability.
Combining Client Health Score with SLA delivers real-time monitoring of every Wi-Fi client in the network to a single dashboard capable of viewing tens of thousands of clients simultaneously. In addition, SLA features policy-based remediation that automatically addresses many client health issues without any administrator intervention. HiveManager 3.5 also provides historical reports to aid troubleshooting and to help identify and proactively address potential future problems.
Greater Network Visibility and Control with TeacherView
The pervasive deployment of Wi-Fi has created a new tier of "reluctant" administrators. In the classroom, teachers have become the first line of IT support, often resulting in the loss of valuable teaching time. To alleviate this issue, Aerohive is introducing TeacherView. The new application, harnesses the distributed processing and rich policy enforcement capabilities of Aerohive's HiveAP access points to allow teachers to monitor and control network usage without IT involvement. The easy to use TeacherView interface empowers teachers, giving them the ability to monitor client connection health and student web browsing and also to control network usage by dynamically changing students' network access policy or even redirect all clients to a web site of their choice.
Isle of Wright County Schools relies heavily on its Wi-Fi network to provide its approximately 5,500 students within its nine schools the best possible education experience. Like many other schools at the forefront of using technology, the burden of managing clients in the classroom often times falls on the teacher.
"iPods and the other interactive applications we provide are an incredible learning tool. However, we quickly realized that our teachers were spending too much time managing the classroom, taking away valuable teaching time," said Joshua Spaugh, Director of Technology at Isle of Wright County Schools. "We are very excited that Aerohive is introducing TeacherView. This is the first tool we've come across that allows the teacher to make changes at the classroom level. At the touch of a button, the teacher is able to turn off access to the Internet, send students to a particular Web site and monitor the sites being used to ensure they are focused on the task at hand."
TeacherView will be rolled out in two versions. The first version, TeacherView Cart is designed for static classroom or cart configuration. The full version of TeacherView will run on a separate server and scale to service entire school districts. See below for pricing and availability.

The HiveOS and HiveManager 3.5 will be available July 30, 2010 as a free upgrade for all Aerohive customers. TeacherView Cart application will be available in September and will be included with HiveOS 3.5 free of charge. General Availability of the full version of the TeacherView application is planned for the first quarter of 2011. Pricing is to be determined.
